Learn best practices for inclusion in the workplace

In our commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable business community that supports the diversity of Boston’s workforce, the Chamber is thrilled to offer a new corporate workshop available exclusively for Chamber members.

Strengthen your team’s commitment to LGBTQIA+ inclusion for staff and clients with this comprehensive workshop, ideal for companies of all sizes and industries. This workshop is led by Boston’s Future Leaders alum Ali Kane, Principal of ALK Consulting, who brings over ten years of experience advocating for LGBTQIA+ inclusion and championing community-centric fundraising at several prominent New England cultural institutions.

Grounded in leading research and lived experience, Ali will guide your staff through the fundamentals of gender identity and sexual orientation, and best practices for inclusion in the workplace. The workshop builds upon the foundations of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility for companies who are committed to the LGBTQIA+ community. Attendees will be empowered to foster safe, affirming environments to support both staff and client satisfaction and retention.

Ali Kane (she/they) is a Queer nonprofit leader and lifelong learner working to assert the value of the unique role that cultural nonprofits play in the world of social justice. Through ALK Consulting, they further this work by offering LGBTQ+ inclusion workshops to cultural organizations to create more affirming spaces for staff, visitors, and the community at large.

In addition to ALK Consulting, Ali advocates for health equity as Grants Management Specialist at Family Health Center of Worcester. Previously, at New England Botanic Garden, she served as Manager of Corporate and Foundation Relations and founded the Garden’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee. They were also appointed to the American Public Garden Association’s IDEA Committee, considering how gardens throughout the nation can be welcoming to all.

In 2020, upon discovering there was no public LGBTQ+ resource and support network for LGBTQ+ professionals in the museum field, she founded the LGBTQ+ Museum Staff & Students with Sam Dinnie, which is hosted by the New England Museum Association, building queer community across the globe.

Currently, they are Treasurer of Love Your Labels, a nonprofit that supports LGBTQIA+ youth explore gender through art, design, and fashion. Previously, she has served as a member of the Worcester Pride Coordinating Committee and Vice President of the No Evil Project. They hold a Master’s in Nonprofit Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, a Diversity & Inclusion Champion Certificate from the Bentley University Center for Women & Business, and are a graduate of the Boston's Future Leaders program at Harvard Business School.

Aside from educating and community-building, they enjoy playing board games, supporting local drag artists, and sampling local eats with their partner and cats in Worcester, MA.

FAQs

  • What are the available workshop formats?

This workshop is available in a 90 minute or 3-hour time block and can be delivered virtually or in-person at your office.

  • What is the resource book and why is there an extra fee for it?

When you reserve your workshop, you have the option of adding on a 50+ page reference book created by our consultant, which includes extensive resources, definitions, recommended language, and articles for your company to utilize. The reference book will be delivered to you in a PDF format upon completion of the workshop.

  • What is the business case for LGBTQIA+ inclusion?

Other than demonstrating your company’s dedication to a full spectrum of diversity, equity, and inclusion, training your staff specifically on LGBTQIA+ inclusion opens the door for a happier workforce and a more successful bottom line. When you think about talent recruitment and retention, keep in mind that 1 in 5 Gen Z individuals identify as LGBTQIA+, and nearly 3 in 5 LGBTQIA+ adults reported that discrimination had a moderate or significant impact on their mental well-being. When you think about brand awareness and client development and retention, consider that Americans are twice as likely to buy or use a brand if the brand publicly supports and demonstrates a commitment to expanding or protecting LGBTQIA+ rights. To prepare for the evolving workforce, it is imperative that businesses and the professionals within them understand how to be effective allies and create inclusive workplaces.

  • Will someone from the Chamber be present for the workshop?

The Chamber’s Director of Learning & Development will attend the preliminary meeting between the consultant and your company, but a Chamber representative will not be present for the workshop itself. However, you will be in communication with a Chamber rep from the time you book the workshop to the workshop follow-up.

  • What is the cancellation policy?

Attendees must cancel by email at least 5 business days in advance of the seminar for a full refund.
