PACESETTERS SUCCESS STORY

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Success Story with Good Life Productions

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts’s (BCBSMA) partnership with Good Life Productions is an example of how relationship building between a buyer and supplier can take time.  It also serves as an example of how the investment in ongoing conversations can ultimately lead to a contracting opportunity. “Our contract with Good Life Productions is a direct result of our engagement with the Pacesetters Program,” said Jay McQuaide, BCBSMA’s Chief Communications & Citizenship Officer. “As a result of several conversations, and a comprehensive review of its capabilities, our team became convinced that Good Life would be a strong addition to our existing portfolio of vendors.” BCBSMA is committed to ensuring diverse representation within their supplier relationships and has embedded supplier diversity into their corporate strategy. To expand their reach and knowledge of minority-owned business enterprises throughout Greater Boston, they joined the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce Pacesetters Program in 2018.

The corporate communications team at BCBSMA first became acquainted with Good Life Productions, a woman and minority-owned videography business, through the company’s work with the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce’s Pacesetters Program.  As a long-standing vendor of the Chamber, Good Life Productions created a branding video for the Pacesetters Program in 2020 in which BCBSMA was featured. Through this experience, the BCBSMA corporate communications team saw first-hand the capabilities and sophistication of Good Life Productions. The corporate communications team was impressed with the finished product of the branding video; however, a BCBSMA contract was not available at that time. It was years of relationship-building that ultimately led to a contract agreement.

Good Life Team on filming site

A Blossoming Contract

In the Summer of 2022, amid a review of its existing videography vendors, BCBSMA reached out to Good Life to discuss potential partnership opportunities. Impressed by the experience of their team, the depth of their offerings, and the sophistication of their videos, BCBSMA decided to offer Good Life a formal contract.  And in March 2023, BCBSMA chose Good Life to handle the production of a critical, all-company virtual meeting hosted by the company’s CEO. It reinforced the confidence the BCBSMA Corporate Communications team has in the quality of Good Life’s capabilities.

Good Life has been a good fit for BCBSMA due to their experience, flexibility, and the know-how to do a variety of different video projects for BCBSMA. With 18 years of experience, Good Life has produced a wide variety of videos for businesses and organizations:  one person interviews, a multi-camera filming of large events, videos honoring high-profile CEOs with complicated graphics, short social media videos, and creative “mockumentaries”. This breadth of skills and experiences makes companies of all sizes feel confident working with Good Life. The firm’s small size combined with an extended team of videographers, editors, and for contract hire keeps pricing competitive and affordable, allowing them to be nimble and flexible. Julia Cruz, Principal and Executive Producer states, “We’re very excited to be working with BCBSMA. It’s exciting to know a corporation of its size and stature is willing to provide this opportunity to Good Life. It gives us a chance to prove ourselves in a larger forum and show other big companies that size doesn’t always matter in the world of video production.”

Lessons Learned

From this contract, Good Life has learned the importance of patience. “Sometimes when you get an initial inquiry, you think something is going to come of it right away, but businesses, especially large corporate entities, have a lot on their plate, and video production is not always their priority. Experience has taught me that if you’re confident in your product or service, the clients will hire you when they’re ready.”

Successful contracts require a reciprocal respect for the other’s time, resources, and needs. In each proposal Good Life provided specific details and potential additional costs (additional filming days, voiceover narration, aerial footage etc.). In doing so, their clients know they have options, and they know what those options may cost. Price transparency on both the buyer and supplier side allows for both parties to make informed decisions resulting in equitable contract terms. Good Life stresses the importance of communication and credits its success to asking in-depth questions regarding the projects and providing timely answers to one another’s questions. The partnership of these two companies demonstrates that a contract is often created from a foundation of intentional outreach and relationship building over time.
